Jesus Loves Me

Posted on May 6, 2010 at 10:05 AM

On Tuesday evening I spoke at a Women's Ministry Banquet at a church here in London. There was a very talented group of girls there to perform, students of the pastor's wife. The last of their offerings was the simple and simply beautiful Jesus Loves Me. I would have gone, just for that.

What peace it brought at just that moment. (I was a little nervous as I always am before a talk.)

It got me to thinking about a blog post I wrote some time ago about how we love him because he first loved us. When I put that together with the fact that out of our love for him, we can love people around us, (He who says he loves God but hates his brother, lies and the truth is not in him. ) a thought emerged:

What if, when I'm feeling agitated with someone, I just stopped and said to myself, "Jesus loves me!"  or "My father God loves me!"?  Would it have the same effect that little song did?

So I've been trying out my theory. Of course it's just been a couple of days, and I don't get upset with people very often so my data base is very small, but so far, it seems to be working. Somehow, it calms me down and I don't feel the need to follow through on my irritation with nasty words or even just thoughts.

Just yesterday some people did something that disturbed me and I was about to go into a mental tirade about them, but I stopped and said,"But God loves me!" As I thought about that I could feel my irritation leave.

A challenge for you: Just give it a try. Test my theory for me. You could even let me know how it works for you.

Hmm interesting approach. I haven't specifically tried this one, Fay. However, I have on occasion reminded myself that God loves them (the 'irritant persons'), and I love them too, and have found that helps.

Food for thought Fay. Personally I always tell my self that God loves the person who has ruffled my feathers and I pray for them. That works too, but it woukd be comforting too to reflect on His love for me:)

I know what you both mean. I've done that too. :-) But I have found that the fact that God loves them might make me want to love them but it doesn't always. And sometimes I don't feel like loving them right then, and my emotions want to send me in a different direction altogether. So I'm up for anything that calms me down and gets me on the right track!! :-) I figured If loving God is supposed to result in my loving others, and loving him is a response to his loving me, then if 1=2, and 2=3, then maybe to get to 3 I should start with 1. Mud??

1st John gives us all kinds of reasons to look at those who irritate us in a different light, including 4:20 which you quoted.
I like your theory. Maybe we need to remind ourselves that God loves us every half hour or so. We might find that we won't be so easily irritated and our lives would probably have a lot less stress in them.
