Is it I, Lord?

Posted on June 24, 2009 at 1:46 PM

I just came from a funeral mass for my friend's mother.

It is the fifth time in my life I have attended a Catholic church, and for the fifth time in my life I've had to resist the temptation to pop the song-book into my purse. Note: I have resisted every time!  I promise, Catholic or Protestant, song books all over the world are safe!

This morning, I was moved by one song enough to write it on the back of my check book in order to share it with you. This one probably affected me so much because I lately spent three days with 230-plus writers who are Christian, who definitely identify with the songwriter's need to be led.

It talks about a calling in the night. Sometimes the night-calling is merely to trust, to believe, and to let go of fear. Sometimes, the call is to follow a path we've already identified or to show a new road to take. No matter what the call, the mystery of the voice and, indeed, the hearing of it, is precious. The response brings only joy.

The words may already be familiar to you.

Daniel L. Schutte, 1981; Based on Isaiah 6, in answer to "Whom will I send?"

"Here I am Lord.

Is it I , Lord?

I have heard you calling in the night.

I will go, Lord, if you lead me.

I will hold your people in my heart."

Yes, it is a lovely song, Fay. It's sung with fair frequency in our community's interchurch services, such as on the World Day of Prayer.
Word Alive Press was well represented with 'Winner' category books & authors at The Word Guild Awards this year. Sorry I was unable to attend the Awards Gala (and conference) to see you all being honoured.
Your are so right about the rejoicing aspect. Praise God for where Keepers ... is and will be used in ministry for His glory and their help.
Peter.

It is a lovely song. If people were to sing it from their heart, for God knows what is in their heart, it is a serious commitment to serve the Lord, no matter where or when.
I believe the reason God calls us during the night hours is because that is the time our spirit can hear Him without the interference of the body and soul. They tend to rest in the night hours, our spirit never rests.
Just thinking of the first time God spoke to me in the night hours. He spoke in a still small voice. Like Samual I didn't recognize it as God. Unlike Samual I ignored it. Again the still small voice. I rolled over and went back to sleep. Mistake! The next time He spoke, it was like He was in the room with me shouting at me. I heard Him that time and I knew better than to ignore Him that time. He's never had to use the audible voice with me again.
