Hurry Up and Wait

Posted on July 2, 2010 at 9:40 AM

Why do we hate to wait?

We rush to grow up, get married, make money, buy a house, spend money, change locations, make decisions.

To those of us who are chronically in a hurry, waiting can be an extremely dangerous occupation.

While we're waiting for something to happen, whether that something is good or bad, we feel so much pressure to act that the resulting stress seems unbearable. We may not know exactly what to do, but we think we should do something! We think anything would be better than waiting.

And there lies the danger: Doing something is not always better than doing nothing. Doing the wrong thing can be devastating. It can take us off the right path, or shut us down just before a breakthrough. Sometimes the only "doing" required is waiting, whether it is for nature to take it's course, waiting for God to work, or waiting to hear what our next move should be.

Some of the best things in life can't happen without the passing of time. Perhaps that's why we're told to let "patience have her perfect work."

The "work" of patience is to hold us firm until we lack nothing, until what God has spoken is fulfilled.

Time and waiting are often our friends. Patience always is.

Nice Fay and so timely for me. I have been asking the Lord lately if He would hurry it up and get my backslidden children back on track!
Hmm... patience Mary, patience.

Just love the verse on the waiting ......how true is it that we think that we have to be doing all the time...we live in such a doing socieity , and much to do of nothing most times.... this is a character defect that i have been working on sitting with the Lord and just being quite....letting Him do what is needed to be done....I look forward to reading more of your literture....

Reminds me that we need to make time our friend not our enemy. Love you

Hurry is one of the biggest deceptions - its such a noble thing to be "doing". "Be still and know . . ." is difficult for sure but how much do we miss out on by do much busyness?

A needful message -- hits me re. the tendency to fall into the busyness and must-be-up-and-doing aspects.
A very appropriate Scripture.
And, your concluding statement is choice and notable: "Time and waiting are often our friends. Patience always is."
Thanks Fay.

How right you are. I have always done things on the spur of the moment. This time I gave lots of notice for my retirement date. How time drags on.
